exciting things

I am currently celebrating my birthday week. The actual anniversary of my birth is April 1st. Yes, April Fool's Day. Yes, i think that's very funny. Ha. Ha. Despite all this ridiculousness, i had a great birthday. My sis and nephew came down for the weekend and on Saturday night we out for dinner with a bunch of my friends. It was tonnes of fun. (pics to follow). My crazy parents drove down that day (4 hrs) and surprised me too!!

I think they are afraid that when i get married (92 days to go!) i will magically disappear or morph into... i dunno what. But in any case, it was my last birthday being single, so that was cause for a celebration. :)

Tomorrow i am driving to K-town for Easter weekend. Yay! Not to be irreverent, but it makes me laugh to think, "Praise the Lord! Jesus rose from the dead! Let's celebrate! Pass the chocolate!"

Oh, and if JM finishes the big install today (there are four of them working on it), he gets to come home and meet me at my parents in Kelowan! Wheee!

frugal i am

When i taught ESL at my aunt's summer camp, she tried to teach that being called frugal is a compliment. I had to disagree. After much 'teacher talk' she still hadn't won me over.

I found a dress yesterday. It will do the trick. It is very lovely, but doesn't WOW me, like the fairy tales and saleswomen suggest it should. It is also 'only' $735. Not only is that a ludicrous amount of money to spend on a dress, but add to that $125 to hem it and $35 to add a bustle. And let's not forget the tax. In total, my dress-- which i would where ONE day in my life-- would cost over a grand.

Now, let's consider how many hungry families i could feed that day instead... World Vision tells me it costs $1.33/day to feed a child. I could feed one child for 760 DAYS. This could also be calculated as feeding a family of 4 for 190 days. Or, as implied above, instead of buying a big froofy (albeit beautiful) wedding gown, i could feed SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY people on my wedding day. Hmmmm, tough decision... or not.

So, even though my betrothed tells me not to be ridiculous and just find something i love, i don't think i can do it. My cousin's dress just won't fit, though. I'm off to find a seamstress who can work miracles... :)

fat lip

What a beautiful way to start my week:

***this photo has been removed to prevent nightmares; it was in violation of the 'no parental advisory' policy of this blog***

Oh yes, my friends, this is my lip.

Let me tell you, i am quite excited to go to my training session this afternoon at head office. *mcd* Perhaps i will have to find a way to sneak into tomorrow's session instead.

But other than this, i must say i had a fantastic weekend. I will have to get my sis to send me pics from her camera. Most of my fam (sans un frere) came to K-town to play for the weekend. Sylvia, my 18 yr old corolla, is still there. :S

On the way there, we blew a tire, but don't be alarmed! My sister, Lisa, expertly maneuvered the car to the side of the highway and put the spare on in under 10 minutes! Goooooo Lisa!

Once we hobbled into Merrit, I pulled out my expertise and flirted with the Canadian Tire guy until he agreed to warranty my very balding blown tire and replace it for freeeeee! Yay for ditzyness and curvaceousness! (Good thing i wasn't plagued with a fat lip at that point!) LOL. Lisa, the do-it-yourself tomboy, i-can-do-anything-a-guy-can-do was not so impressed with my technique, but we did find the whole situation rather amusing. Whatevs, i got a free tire! :)

Sadly, once we were there, Sylvia decided to stop working. We had to steal our other sister, Karen's, car to come home and leave Sylvia in the capable hands of the doctor there. I've just received word that for only a couple hundred bucks, my geriatric beauty could be good as almost-new. Haha. We shall see. Hopefully in a couple of weeks JM will be back home and can deal with all the car stuff.

As a side note, JM told me i should go outside and watch Lisa and my Dad work on the car so i could learn stuff. I brilliantly replied that he should help me change the baby's diaper because it will be good for him to learn how to do that for when we have our own. He wasn't too keen on that idea. LOL

Life is funny, eh?!

balancing act

(8) I must be an acrobat... (8)

Ok, so here's the thing. I was so excited to go home (to Kelowna, where my parents live) this coming weekend because my brother and his wife and their FIVE kids are going to be there. Whee! What fun. Not to mention my rad parents and fun and exciting sister and adorable nephew who live there. *Sigh* Good times. JM was going to meet me there on his way from Edmonton and spend the weekend with us.

Last night i found out (from his mother first, who called to tell me before JM had a chance to) that JM is going to do a job for his brothers in Prince Rupert. Seriously! Prince Rupert?! You must be joking. (In case you don't know, Prince Rupert is here, 20 hours north of me, on the Alaskan border.) Who goes there?! Let me tell you: JM.

Now, he can make decent money doing this installation, but here's the kicker: he's going to miss this weekend at my parents, he's going to miss my birthday!, aaaaand, he might not even be back in time for Easter (also at my parents, but still.). So, as you can imagine, i was not impressed.

The balancing part of this post comes in the form of my dear, gorgeous lover trying to make up for these disappointments. (In his defense, he didn't realize they'd be gone so long. We were thinking about going down to Seattle for my birthday (Hi Shari!), but since he'll be away, he suggested we could go away a different weekend to celebrate. Maybe to the island (Vancouver Island, that is. Victoria, etc.) or Whistler (one of my personal faves, and my little sis lives there) or Seattle (-sigh- oh, sorry, i was just thinking of McDreamy...). After he bribed me this way, i decided to go for the gusto.

"Well, Darlene and i are going to Mexico in October!" I huffed in defiance.*
"Ya, ok. You should book your tickets right away, so nothing gets in the way of your plans again." He sweetly replied.

VOT?! I fully expected some sort of "HA! Nice try!" But nope, he was just happy to find something to make me excited and get himself off the hook! Haha. Well, no use looking a gift horse in the mouth, or however that saying goes.

So, i suppose the scales of justice have once again found harmony.

And i am going to Mexico!! :)

*We have been trying to go for two years! But she got pregnant and then we had to wait for a year for her baby to be old enough to leave home for a week, so that's took a year and a half, up until last fall. Then i got engaged and couldn't find time to go. Now my wedding is looming ever-closer (108 days to go), so i can't take time off work now. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Meetings

I'd just like to start this post off with a random pleasantry: New blogger sucks. Oh shoots, that's not pleasant. Oh well.

I had a meeting yesterday with my boss, her boss, and the leaders of the church where my program is. After the meeting, the leaders of the church asked me why my boss and her boss where there. (I had chaired the meeting and done almost all of the talking. They just 'corrected' me a couple of times.) I tried to be politically correct and explain that they were there to support me as i explained the new changes to the program, and to make sure we are all on the same page.

"Oh," One of them replied, "So they were here to spy on you!"

Me: blank

(It is probably a faux pas to lie to church leaders, but i don't want to be disloyal to my company.)

I ended up just laughing it off and pretending like that is ridiculous. But secretly i was thinking, "Ah, you guys are pretty smart, eh."

I hid

JM came home last weekend, which was really great and always a treat. Aaaand, since he lost his job last week, he might be coming home for good! But we shall see.

The hiding part of this post takes place at Dairy Queen. Now, i rarely frequent the place because it's not good for me. Ok, the real reason is because it's too expensive. But the last coupla weeks they've had royal treats on sale for $2.10-- 50% off! Which of course is very exciting, because when was the last time you ate a Peanut Buster Parfait or Banana Split?!

I went twice last week, and both times the same girl (assistant manager, Cat) served me. So when i drove through a third time and she looked strangely at me, i was slightly embarrassed. (Yes, i went three times in two weeks. I was on a cleanse for a month and couldn't eat anything yummy, so i had a lot of making up to do! Hm, it's such a mystery why i'm not losing weight. Lol.)

Yesterday, my sister and i stopped there after church for ice cream. We parked and went inside because we had to pee. I was relieved (in more ways than one, har-har-har) to see that Cat was not behind the counter. However, as i rounded the corner after visiting the little girls' room, there she was, at the blizzard machine. Thankfully her back was to us, so she didn't see me duck around and tell my sister i'm not going in there. My sister, of course, burst out laughing because i had been worried about running into that girl the whole way there. I took such a long time giggling and telling my sis what to get me that Cat peered around the counter and looked directly at me to see what all the commotion was about. Which of course made me laugh harder and walk out to wait in the truck.

After all that kerfuffle, we stopped at my future in-laws place to watch a movie. They were all drooling over my sisters sundae (i had polished mine off in the car already), so i volunteered to drive back into town and pick them up some. Oh yes i did. Luckily someone else was at the counter this time. That Cat girl really needs to take some time off!

This post has caused two things:
1) i want an ice cream treat
2) i feel fat and never want to eat another one again

LOL. Go! Enjoy ice cream everyone! It's worth it! Life is short!

crap happens

my betrothed lost his job today. how cool is that?

not cool at all.

now we don't know where he will be working (he is very 'employable', so i'm not too worried), where we will live, if i can go to school, if we'll be able to go for a honeymoon, if he'll be able to take time off for our wedding...

but he is okay because his job was too stressful anyway. and he sounds great on the phone, back to his normal cheerful self. and this means he can come home to visit for a few days!

having money isn't all it's cracked up to be.

boring, random

Strange things that are happening in my world:
People continuously nag me about my lack of wedding plans. (I still have four months left.)
I have acquired the wretched habit of waking at odd hours in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep. Drugs don't help.
I am gaining back the weight that i 'miraculously' lost on my cleanse. (Perhaps i am dirty again?)
Work is a constant source of stress for me.
I love my home and am sad to leave it.
I think i am finally ready to take down my Christmas decorations.
I can't wait to see my lover boy every day, instead of once a month.
I have only 123 days left until my wedding.

eat, drink, and be merry

Dear Mom, Thank you for forwarding funny emails like this. Love, Me

Subject: I found a new physician....
Love this DOCTOR! HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don'twaste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up yourheart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend thelife of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay andcorn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than anefficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafyvegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended dailyallowance of vegetable products.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even moreof the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. BOTTOMS UP!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one.If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regularexercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil.In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be badfor you?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around themiddle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. Youshould only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO! Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the bestfeel-good food around!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have hadabout food and diets. And remember: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with theintention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, butrather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in theother - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO,What a Ride"
