colds suck

I came down with a mean cold the night before my husband came home last weekend. Luckily, this gave us an excuse to stay in bed all weekend!! Yaaaay. Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder-- and more imaginative! ;)
He's back to work now and i am once again pining for him. Sigh.

My dear friend Janice is coming to visit me this weekend. Yaaaay. (Sorry about the repeated Yaaaays-- my teacher does that in class and it makes me laugh, but it's not so funny if you can't hear her voice in your head.) We are going to have so much fun-- staying in a hotel, ordering room service, watching Grey's, wasting away doing nothing, celebrating her birthday... I am very excited.

In other news, i cannot find my passport (which sucks because as of Jan. 1st i won't even be able to drive across the border-- boo to unfriendly american policy makers) or my camera battery charger (ergo, no interesting pics of late).

Thankfully it hasn't snowed yet here. Usually the evil bone-chilling flakes come in October and stay until April. Not my cup o' tea. However, it's still freakin cold and since i cancelled my gym membership when i moved... uh oh. Perhaps i should get a new one, but who has time to exercise?! I'm trying to study!! Speaking of which, i must go study...

pre-holiday holiday

JM is coming home this weekend. YAAAAAY. And my best friend is coming with him! Double yay!

At the end of this month, JM is coming back to write an entrance exam (wish him luck!), and since he will be back, we've decided to have a pre-Christmas get-a-way.

Oh yes! I get to go see the Santa Clause Parade and stay here!

Wanna come?

husband blues

JM went away for work again. It really sucks and i hate it. But i do love the pretty pay checks he brings home with him. Teehee.

Someone said, "well now you can get more studying done because you won't have to spend time with your husband."

A) Not so.
B) Like that would make it all better!

My dear husband is a bit of a study nazi. I can't cook, clean, or play until all my studying is done. So, naturally, since he's been gone, but study habits have, well... disappeared. Sad, but true.

I have begun listening to Christmas music early this year. I always wait until after Remembrance day, but I was so upset about being 1200kms away from my hubby that i indulged already. Needing to be cheered up AND the fact that it's freaking cold in this province. Egad, i don't know how people survive during winter.

Speaking of winter, i went to go get ice tires put on today. I got to Costco at 9:30 when it opened. There were already 20 people in line in front of me. Hm. I waited patiently in line for half an hour. Then, when there were still five people in front of me, the tire guy came out to announce that they were all filled up for the day and to try again tomorrow (since they only do walk-ins, no appointments). Clearly, i am not a happy camper. Now, instead of enjoying my extra hour of sleep tonight (day light savings ends-- i don't think the U.S. has that any more, eh?), I will be lining up at Costco half an hour before they open to make sure i get new tires tomorrow.

(Yes, i could go somehwere else, but they are more than a hundred bucks cheaper for the set here. And since i don't like being away from my husband, i am determined to spend as little as possible.)

Oh, but don't feel bad for me, my sweetie is coming home every second weekend to play. And i have amazing friends coming from the coast to visit me while he is away! Well, actually, do feel a little sorry for me-- i'm still sad.

pancakes

On Saturday mornings we eat pancakes in our house. Ryan (JM's cousin who lives upstairs) made us pancakes once and i liked it soooo much that i harass him into making them every week. It makes me laugh because the boys buy organic whole-grain pancake mix, add organic blueberries... and chocolate chips. Hm, odd, no?

Last time, Ryan was still sleeping, so i asked JM to make pancakes while i went for a jog. (And by "jog" i meant "leisurely stroll." But jog sound so much better). I came home to the smell of yummy pancakes.

I went upstairs to find scary pancakes instead! My dear husband had added so much fruit that the pancakes weren't being held together properly. This might also have to do with the fact that he refuses to make small-ish pancakes (i.e., normal sized); he insists on filling the entire pan with batter to make one jumbo pancake. An unfortunately side-effect of this is the fact that the outside of each one was burnt, while the innards were slightly gooey. Yum.

Well, not being one to discourage him from helping out in the kitchen, i dove right in. The excessive amount of berries actualy tasted quite delicious. I was slightly dismayed to find that he had followed Ryan's lead by adding chocolate chips, but that's neither there nor there... CRUNCH... Hmm, that's odd...

At the same time that i was wondering if I had broken a tooth or something, Ryan asked, "Hey JM, what's the funny color in here all about?"

JM: Oh, that must be the peanut M&M's i added!!

brilliant!

I would just like to share with you the brilliance of the boys i live with: brilliant

If you choose to use two minutes of your life watching this until the end, you will see that my husband is the camerman mastermind behind this shoot. His cousin Ryan, who we live with, is the one with the striped dress shirt. (you may also recognize him from our wedding pics). Ryan's brothers provide the music and, erm, energy, for this little stunt. Enjoy.

labs

Thursdays are lab days and they are my favourite because we get to practice assessments on each other.

There are two classrooms, one with 4 people, the other with 6. The instructor starts out in the other (main) lab room and sometimes forgets about us for a while. Of course, we capitalize on this opportunity by being very professional.

Last week we worked on cardiac and lung assessments, so of course we had to add a nice strip tease to the process. Luckily our instructor has a great sense of humor, so when she walked in on us, she laughed and told us to keep our ta-tas to ourselves and get back to work.

Being a nurse is going to be great.

p.s. trying to edit or do pretty much anything on my new macbook is soooo frustrating. but i hope it's worth the learning curve in the end.
p.p.s. the aforementioned new macbook is also a gift from my oh-so-wonderful husband.

school starts...

So, i love being in nursing school.* It's sooo interesting learning about the awesome functioning of our amazing bodies.

I was accepted into the U of A nursing program, but didn't have a high enough GPA to get into the Edmonton (main) campus. Instead, i have to drive an hour and a half (each way) to a little tiny town called Camrose and go to class there. While, of course, this is mildly irritating since i now waste 12 hours of each week sitting in my car (not to mention the stupid amount of money spent on gas).** However, i am now quite pleased and agree with Garth that "some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayer." This is evidenced by the fact that i have only 20 people in my class, instead of 300+ that would be at the big campus. Also, my teachers are so fantastic. I have one teacher for three out of five classes and she rocks. She is super sweet and makes things interesting. (She kiiiiiinda almost reminds me of Sydney, the annoying doctor from Grey's Anatomy, but she's NOT irritating, just endearing). She does an excellent job of fostering a great learning environment. No question is a dumb question (even if we should have learned it from our readings) and she is very encouraging.

For example, sitting in lab last week, she was going around asking us questions about the lung examinations we were about to practice.
Teacher: Chucky, would this be in the top or the bottom of the lung?
Chucky: um.... bottom?
Teacher: (Smiling encouragingly) Nooooo...
Awkward pause while she gives him time to think and he's thinking, "you must be joking"
After it becomes evident Mrs. S is waiting for a response...
Chucky: Top?!
Teacher: RIGHT!! Very good! (Pleased as punch that her brilliant students have figured something out)

LMAO... Driving home that day he was like, "how the heck could anyone get that wrong a second time?!?!"

So you see, she is very sweet and a great teacher, but sometimes she makes us chuckle.

*This love for nursing school is in spite of the fact that my week consists of:
17 hrs of class time
12 hrs of driving
40 hrs of reading (which i haven't yet been able to finish all the assigned readings in yet)
one 10 page paper
one 2 page write up
3 quizzes
1 test
Slim to none chance of spending quality time with my new (extremely gracious and patient) husband

**This is made more bearable by my friend, Chucky, who i pick up half way there. I will try to post stories from our driving adventures later, but mostly they are quite jeuvenile and funny to only myself.
